A lot of people are hoping for some kind of connectivity in terms of a second screen device for SMM2. And it's obvious why; SMM1 was the definitive best use of the Gamepad. Creating levels just by drawing on the screen was so quick and intuitive. Now obviously we don't have a clear idea of how to use the control scheme they have in mind for the sequel, but I simply can't imagine it being as easy to pick-up-and-go as the Gamepad's controls and layout provided.
Obviously some people have turned to the Mobile Market. Nintendo is keen to expand their lineup of mobile games since the rampant success of Fire Emblem Heroes, and maybe there could be integration already made with the Nintendo Switch Online application.
But it is important to not completely disregard the 3DS. Nintendo has repeatedly stated how they have plans for the 3DS for "into 2019 and beyond" and how they want to support big titles that are already on their platforms with DLC.
A free update with a "Warp Zone" feature to the 3DS version that lets you transfer levels you made on the go with the 3DS to Super Mario Maker 2 on the Switch would be a good way to satiate the appetite of those that will lament the loss of the Gamepad. Some may mention or argue that elements within Mario Maker 2 not present in Mario Maker 1 would prevent/limit creativity, and while that is true it is also entirely possible for there to be a separate "Switch Only" creators studio on 3DS that will let you only build levels and port them over, just not test them on 3DS.
