So I've been listening to the whole podcast over again as I drive to and from school and other engagements most days and I've come to notice something about the way Cecil talks about and even feels about Dana in comparison to past interns. It seems that Cecil has an actual attachment to Dana in comparison to past, and even present interns like Maureen. Whenever he refers to her as "Mayor Cardinal" now he always points out that she was a former intern at the radio station, which I understand why he'd be proud of proclaiming. But he also refers to her as an old friend and that made me stop and wonder. Where did these feelings come from?
Maureen made it clear during the two year anniversary episode that Cecil couldn't even be bothered to remember the interns who have passed through the radio station, which in all fairness there have been a lot. Yet Dana has become such a "cherished friend", why? Was it because she actually came back from the brink of (seeming) death when she survived her experience in the Dog Park? It would make sense that Cecil would put more emotional attachment on an intern who survived the rigors and hazards of working for NVPR. That way he wouldn't have to truly mourn the passing of each new hopeful face that goes to appease and croon to Station Management and never return. So then why does he not talk about Maureen in the same way? She too returned from her seemingly exit from reality and existence and yet the moment she stepped back into the show he dismissed her to go do some grunt work and when Former Mayor Pamela Winchell blew her away, the news was treated with the same tone and lack of emotion as any other "Intern Accident".
What I'd like to posit to the community is this. Was there perhaps something between Cecil and Dana during her time at the Radio Station? Or perhaps Cecil is trying to ride on Dana's coattails and garner more privileges/benefits for him and the radio station? Or perhaps it's some feeling of owing her for helping to save Night Vale? What do you all think?
Forgive me if this has already been posted or discussed, but it's something that has been in my mind for a while now and I've been wanting to talk about it with my fellow fans.
