I decided to look at the NFL since 2002 and plot out all the record changes during that time to figure out which team had the most dramatic swings during the time period and which were the most consistent. I came up with this:
Season Over Season Win Total Changes
The above data is an absolute value calculation of the difference in win totals from one year to the next. In order to see where every team ranked as far as most change in wins over the period I took the sum and ordered them by largest to smallest:
Based on this, we can see that Carolina has had a whopping 68 win variance between 2002 and 2017, 6 games more than the second place change of Tampa Bay, interesting that the top two teams in this stat are from the same division. New England and Buffalo round out the bottom two with strong consistency year over year, interestingly also from the same division.
Next I wanted to see how consistently they vary in records, so I took a standard deviation (volatility measure) and plotted and ordered it here:
As we can see here, Houston and Indianapolis are the most inconsistent when it comes to record changes. While Chicago and Buffalo were the most consistent changers An example to understand what this means: Houston may have swings of large amounts of wins, then next year have a small change, whereas Buffalo will consistently change by around the same amount.
Finally, I took all this date and plotted it in Tableau to create this map:
Quadrant Mapping of NFL Teams Win Changes
I'm not sure what inconsistently not changing means, but I had no idea how else to describe it. Anyway hope people enjoy this.
