We've probably all heard the curse that whoever hosts the Super Bowl has never played in the Super Bowl that year. I've always thought that was a bit ambiguous and have saw a more sinister trend that is not talked about. The trend is that whoever hosts the Super Bowl, their QB either gets hurt, benched or has a terrible year. I looked into this to see if there has been any discussion on this and I wasn't able to find anything so I did a little research and made a little something that I wanted to share. It's not complete and I am sure it can be expanded on but it covers the past 14 seasons (stopped there because wikipedia became very vague and incomplete). If there is anything that needs to be added or revised, please let me know.
Year | Team/Host | QB | Result | Team Record | notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
2017 | MIN | Sam Bradford | Injured/Benched | 13-3 | Lost in NFC Championship |

2014 | ARI | Carson Palmer | Injured | 11-5 | Started 9-1, Lost in Wild Card Round |

2012 | NO | Drew Brees | remained healthy and had a good season | 7-9 | Sean Payton was suspended for the year due to "Bountygate", missed playoffs |
2011 | IND | Peyton Manning | Missed entire season due to neck surgery | 2-14 | Worst record in the league |
2011 | IND | Kerry Collins | Injured | 2-14 | see above |
2010 | DAL | Tony Romo | Injured | 6-10 | Wade Phillips was fired mid-season after starting 1-7 |
2009 | MIA | Chad Pennington | Injured | 7-9 | Missed Playoffs |
2008 | TB | Jeff Garcia | Benched/Injured | 9-7 | Started 9-3 (6-0 at home). Missed Playoffs. Gruden and Bruce Allen were fired at the end of the season |
2007 | ARI | Matt Leinart | Benched | 8-8 | Barely missed playoffs |
2006 | MIA | Daunte Culpepper | Benched | 6-10 | Nick Saban left after this season to coach at Alabama |
2005 | DET | Joey Harrington | Injured | 5-11 | Detroit |
2004 | JAX | Byron Leftwich | Played Full Season for the first time | 9-7 | Missed Playoffs |
In conclusion, my idea that the QB of the host city will have a dismal season is mostly true with the sole exception over the past couple of years being Drew Brees.
