Largest playoff changeover ever

This last season, the amount of teams in the Playoffs was the same. However, the teams that made the playoffs were drastically different, where, of the 12 teams that made the 2015 playoffs, only 5 of them remained for the 2016 playoffs.
To spark some sort of discussion, what caused this? Has there been seasons in the past with more changeover? Did the 1987 strike cause a lot of teams to change comparitively?
