Nothing super-exciting, but a line graph makes a nice way to get an overview of division rivalries. It makes it easy to pick out interesting patterns that you might not have otherwise noticed, like that the Green Bay Packers have dominated their division for the last 7 6 years [not just done best overall, but actually gone furthest in the playoffs every single year, with no ties] or that until Carolina got good a few years ago, no team had ever finished on top of the NFC South for two years in a row.
I posted something like this last season; this version is updated through 2016. This time, I added similar charts for overall divisional performance, which ought to be useful in settling those perennial arguments about which division is strongest, as well as highlighting other interesting points. For instance, the AFC East is clearly the best division in the AFC by any measure—it has been represented more than any other division at every level (tied with the North for Super Bowl victories)—but the North had the best individual year, in 2008-09, when the Conference Championship was essentially the AFC North division championship, and the winner won the Super Bowl. The graphs are in the album above, but here they are separately:
AFC
NFC
Other notes:
Since the charts only cover postseason performance, the years refer to the years of the playoffs in question, following the season that began the previous year. E.g., 2003 was the playoff year of the 2002-03 season.
The labels on the y-axis (e.g. "Super Bowl") refer to appearances, not victories.
The color used for each team is an official color of that team, FWIW. If you're color-blind and you have trouble with some of them, suggest a better color scheme for the problematic one(s) and I'll try to oblige.
The histories in the title album only go back to 2003 (2002-3) since that was the earliest year that any given (current) division contained the same set of teams as today, but here are a couple of longer histories (one year out of date).
