Hello Everybody,
I wanted to take a look at the last first round pick each team spent on offense and defense, and all the interesting correlations that can be drawn from that information.
So, I'll start with the data.
Here is the last year that each team spent a first round pick on offense:
And here is the last year each team spent a first round pick on defense:
There's some really interesting things here that I want to point out to get the ball rolling on discussion.
Three teams used a first round pick on offense and defense in 2014. (The Vikings, Browns, and Rams) This gets even more impressive as the Rams and Vikings also spent a first rounder on offense and defense in 2013, and the Minnesota Vikings have had a first round pick on both sides of the ball a ridiculous 3 years in a row.
Several teams that have stuck to one side of the ball had a particularly painful last pick. The Jets last offensive pick was Mark Sanchez in 2009 and the Broncos last offensive pick was Tim Tebow in 2010.
2012 is the longest first-round selection drought for any team. Both the Seahawks and Redskins haven't picked in the first round in the last two-years. The Seahawks took Bruce Irvin in 2012, and the Redskins took Robert Griffin III.
Six teams (Denver, New York Jets, Oakland, Baltimore, Jacksonville, and Tennessee) have stuck to one side of the ball in the last four drafts or more. Three of the six have failed to make the playoffs in that time.
