Hey Howdy Hey, /r/nfl
1 year ago, /u/smileyman made a post looking in-depth into the 14 100 million dollar NFL contracts at the time and their total payouts. I wanted to take his information and look at the trend in contract growth.
Here is /u/smileyman 's contract chart:
Player | Year | Total | Guaranteed | Length | Per year | Actual Earnings |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Joe Flacco | 2013 | $120.6 million | ?? | 6 years | $20.1m | N/A |
Drew Brees | 2012 | $100 million | $60 million | 5 | $20m | $40m |
Calvin Johnson | 2012 | $132 million | $37.25 million | 8 | $16.5 m | $17.25m |
Larry Fitzgerald | 2011 | $120m | $45m | 8 | $15m | $40.25m |
Michael Vick | 2011 | $100 million | $35.5 million | 6 | $16.67m | $32.5m |
Eli Manning | 2009 | $106.9 million | $35 million | 7 | $15.3m | $58.75 |
Albert Haynesworth | 2009 | $100m | $41m | 7 | $14.3m | $32m |
Ben Roethlisberger | 2008 | $102million | $33.2m | 8 | $12.75m | $72.7m |
Carson Palmer | 2005 | $118.75 million | $27m | 9 | $12.25m | $74.75m |
Michael Vick | 2004 | $130m | $37m | 10 | $13m | $39m |
Daunte Culpepper | 2003 | $102m | $16m | 10 | $10.2m | ?? |
Donovan McNabb | 2002 | $115m | $20.5m | 12 | $9.58m | $62m |
Brett Favre | 2001 | $101.5m | $22m | 10 | $10.5m | $62.5m |
Drew Bledsoe | 2001 | $103m | $24m | 10 | $10.3 | $15m |
As you can see by this chart, from 2001-2013, we saw 14 9-figure contracts. That's 14 in 12 years, meaning that we had just over 1 per year.
Following Joe Flacco's post-Super Bowl payday, we've had the following contracts signed:
Player | Total | Guaranteed | Length |
---|---|---|---|
Aaron Rodgers | $110 million | $54 million | ?? |
Matt Ryan | $104 million | $42 million | 5 |
Colin Kaepernick | $114 million | $13 million | 6 |
Jay Cutler | $127 million | $38 million | 7 |
Tony Romo | $108 million | $40 million | 6 |
JJ Watt | $100 million | $20 million | 6 |
So this tells a few things:
100 million dollar contracts are far more common. From the inception of the NFL to 2009, we saw nine of these contracts, and from 2011-2014 we've already seen 11.
The salary cap is not what it used to be. As the NFL tv contracts continue to inflate the total salary cap, teams will be willing to shell out huge total contract and guaranteed money numbers for premiere players.
The passing-based league has made quarterbacks incomparably valuable. 16/20 total contracts went to quarterbacks.
2015 is relatively quiet, but the list of quarterbacks that are scheduled to be free agents in 2016 are: Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Phillip Rivers, Sam Bradford, Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, Nick Foles, and Russell Wilson. If this trend continues, will a quarterback ever be extended for less than $100 million dollars again?
