How to distribute ability points

If i am playing with 2 weapons that have 3 different attributes that they go off of. Am i better off just putting the points into the attribute that they have in common??
Example: the rapier and hatchet go off of dex, int, and str. With dex being the common attribute. Would it be best for me to split my points between con and dex??
Any help would be awesome thanks
