Description from Pleasant Family Shopping on Facebook:

One look at a photo like this, and who wouldn’t want to go back to the colorful world of late 1950s retail, if only for a little while?

Shown here is a portion of the Grand-Way store on Route 17 in Paramus, New Jersey, not too long after its opening in 1958. This particular store was notable for its location (Paramus was one of America’s great shopping playgrounds) and its curved-roof architecture. Also, the “Foodomat”, a gravity flow rack system for canned goods (a Grand Union invention) and their delightful flair for signage and displays are seen here.

Grand-Way, an early discount department store/supermarket combination, was a division of The Grand Union Company, one of America’s most storied grocery chains, headquartered in nearby East Paterson (known as Elmwood Park since the 70s), NJ. The first Grand-Way opened in 1956, and the division held on into the 1970s, with stores in Grand Union’s Northeast (primarily NY, NJ and CT) and Florida market areas.

When the Grand-Way division was folded in the late 70s, this location became a Kmart, eventually closing in 2014. After that it housed an indoor soccer complex. Apparently site redevelopment plans are now in the works by the property’s owner, Stop & Shop.
