Yesterday I injured my hand at work and required stitches and a tetanus shot. I arrived at St. Claires at 1:15pm and never left until 1:30am. In my 12 hours of waiting I had never seen so many people get angry and belligerent at workers doing their jobs.
Yes, with that hospital you get a different type of clientele compared to the Health Science and this may be a factor for these confronfations, but I heard an insane amount of offensive things said to the workers working that was not deserved.
Emergency rooms are clogged due to a doctor shortage, wait times are getting exceptionally long. I didn't want to wait 12 hours to fix a hole in my hand, but I also know it wasn't the fault of the people working there. Our health care system is fucked along with the rest of Canada. The people who decide to work in these places every day deserve more respect and patience that they get. They shouldn't be verbally abused by every other person because they don't want to wait. People are seen in order of severity, it's common knowledge. If someone is rushed in before you, you should be thankful because they're likely suffering more than you know.
Blame the government making these decisions, blame our health care system that doesn't want to attract permanent workers but prefer to hire travelling nurses at a higher price. People in the health care industry aren't in it to be assholes, don't be an asshole to them.
Yelling at the people that do show up in these difficult times and situations to do their jobs (nurses, teachers, etc) is just going to push them to leave these positions and compound the problem. Lots of people have, because they also need to protect their own health and wellbeing. I imagine itβs a lot of the same people that get upset at employees who are underpaid and run off their feet serving their coffee too slow in an understaffed Tim Hortons.
