Is overemphasis of diagnosis a form of social control?

I feel like in neurodivergent communities there's a lot of discussion about diagnoses. It seems weird to me that people attach so much importance to this. Sure, there are actual benefits to getting a diagnosis sometimes (like access to accommodations, medication, etc.) But there are also plenty of reasons not to want a diagnosis or to just not care. But there are still a lot of people who talk about wanting a diagnosis to feel validated. This might be my inner conspiracy theorist talking, but it seems really convenient for the people in power to make us want to formally document the non-conventional ways our brains' function.
