I have an inquiry regarding tiktok and its experience/useability. I have difficulties following content like videos and television due to sound sensitivity and difficulty maintaining focus. Usually I get by with shows by pretty much solely reading the closed captioning and taking in visual details in the periphery, which usually brings the focus on audio down to a manageable level (Have to admit this is usually a lot less doable with youtube videos). I still usually can't do this for more than ten minutes at a time. Worst things are when videos with sound have any sort of autoplay feature, and I think my ideal video experience would be captioned and no volume, a toggle to turn volume on and off per video or only play audio with additional action, and if possible a text description.
At this point I've seen tiktoks primarily on reddit and tumblr, so there are a few peeps I have interest in following. I've noticed at least some of the videos have captions/text across the screen, and they all seem to be relatively short. Two points in favor! But both of these platforms have an app-local mute, which allows me to choose to watch content silent, or brace myself if I turn the volume on, without fiddling with my phone volume levels all the time.
As such, what are peeps' thoughts on tiktok's usability/experience in these regards? Specific questions: Do you generally use tiktok with or without sound? Is there app-local mute settings? Is there autoplay? I'm guessing captioning varies on tiktok depending on the creator, what are your experiences with it? Are there/how common are text descriptions? Oh also, how easy is it for you to get lost in scrolling? Thanks for any input!
