I’ve mostly seen this in anime community. As soon as there is an anime character that’s shy, reversed or doesn’t talk much, they are immediately labeled as autistic. Since when did we boil down autism or neurodivergence to just introversion? Or since when being an introvert equals being autistic? I assume this mostly comes from either self-diagnosed neurodivergents, or people who have no idea of what they are talking about. It’s getting really annoying where almost all animes apparently have an autistic character.

very true.
Through the years though, especially as a woman, I realised the characters this lead me to identify with were often manic pixie dream girls or infantilised women merely there for the lead‘s character development, with no development of their own. I guess there‘s a big overlap of female characters having neurodivergent traits (mainly the ‚positive’ ones) and being weird objects of desire.
I don‘t know if that makes sense. Would also like to know if anyone has observed similar patterns in male characters.
