Reading a book on meditation and EEG is mentioned. What’s the significance of the “sudden and massive spike in activity” in this example?

The author probably means the monstrous increase in high-frequency gamma waves that emerges during meditation of highly trained monks.

I posted an image of this unusual phenomenon some months ago:

The picture shows the EEG recorded from buddhist monks who had done up to 50,000 hours of meditation practice. It shows the moment they began with their meditation.

You would never see this immense increase in gamma band activity in the average person. This probably reflects the neural basis of some unimaginable state of consciousness that they call nirvana or enlightenment.
