What's a decent patch set?

I was playing the Ubuntu standard distribution, and got a segfault on a save-restore (I was riding a horse when I saved, I vaguely remember an old bug about that). So, I'm looking to compile my own build that hopefully doesn't suck as much as the stock.
Trouble is, I'm super lazy.
There are zillions of patches out there, but it's hard to tell which are good and which aren't so much, and a lot seem to include subtle gameplay changes.
So... what do you guys use for nethack sources? Alternatively, should I just stick with telnet nethack.alt.org and be done with monkeying around with passing judgement on patches?
