Rotten Food?

Is it possible to identify rotten food? I don't even understand how your hero can be stupid enough to eat rotten food, but I have died so many times now to eating rotten food and passing out, then getting murdered in my sleep by some random monster.
How can you even beat the game when chances essentially guarantee that you will be murdered just from eating in the game. This rotten food mechanic itself is pretty rotten. It is impossible to avoid.
