New player here, am I doing this wrong?

So far I really like this game and I think I've got the hang of it, except for two things.

1) I die, a lot, I don't think I've gotten past 1500 turns without dying from some unfortunate new death.

2) How far do the dungeons go? Many times I'll get stuck on the first floor and I can't find a staircase, however I've been mainly using the android port on my phone, so that may have something to do with it.

I'm ok-ish with the first one, I think eventually I'll get better, but any tips or suggestions with avoiding the second?
