I need to rave about Blue Eye Samurai a little bit here, why I need a second season!
Post Body

It was one of my favorite things I've watched in ages. Kill Bill Vol. 1 was one of my favorite movies I've ever watched, so seeing the immediate homages was incredible. When the Kill Bill theme hit I went freaking bonkers, and then when I realized the first episode was literally Kill Bill Vol. 1 in the Shogun era I was so stoked. Knowing that Kill Bill was heavily inspired by anime, and seeing we had come full circle and that almost exactly 20 years later we had an anime heavily borrowing from Quentin Tarantino's work was incredible to me. The fact that we had a good number scene for scene recreations in the first episode, as well as Mizu being a proxy for "The Bride", but with a pretty massive divergence was so cool.

The dropping of the training weights scene didn't bother me either, I've seen this mentioned a few times in almost every criticism of the show. I see like "*scoff* what an unoriginal trope", but to me, it took me back to Goku throwing off his weighted Gi, and how that made me go "OOHHH SHHIIII--- HELL YEAH GOKU TIME TO STOP HOLDING BACK" as I ate cereal in my underwear. I was a massive Dragon Ball fan, and every time somebody threw off their weighted clothes in a battle it meant shit was about to go down.

This entire series is paying homage to so many different pieces of art from the 90s and 2000s, and I'm certain that this is the sole reason for some people to overlook the massive trope-fest that it is, or to at least look at it favorably vs negatively. At my age, 35 years old, these tropes are taking me back to some of the most exciting moments of anime and film from my youth and teenage years, and that particular choice feels VERY deliberate. I'm fully aware just how cheesy it all is objectively, but it's not cheesy at all to me. I also found the voice acting to be just fine, it wasn't perfect or anything, but I often find certain characters so grating that I have to switch to subtitles. That wasn't an issue here for me at all!

I cringed at Mizu's edgy grimdark attitude at first, but she committed to it, and even made me go "damn that's cold" at a certain point. At least they had the balls to make her do some actually horrible things in her journey. I really was convinced that her psyche had been frayed into this cold killing machine with only one goal.

The episode running with the backstory in tandem to the story of the Onryo was just fantastic. The last few episodes felt rushed, and the second half of the season was overall less enjoyable than the first, but it was still a great watch.

I've rarely found myself praying for a second season of a series like this, but I feel like the entire first season was handcrafted to make me feel those same things again. I LOVED seeing my childhood excitement brought into an adult theme. I'm fully invested, and hope so greatly for a second season!

Watch the series for us!!
