The nomination process for Reddit's Best of the Year awards are underway again—and this time it's happening a little differently. From the announcement thread in r/modnews:
Instead of pitting subreddits against each other for a limited set of nominations, the "best of 2012" is an opportunity for us to...share gems from communities of any size...and increase awareness of the diverse and disparate communities many redditors don't know about.
It's time for...
r/neology's Neologism of the Sesquiyear award
Eligible nominees: neologisms submitted anytime by anyone to /r/neology
neologism: word with a sense not previously given by a dictionary.
- word: The word itself, not just the concept for one.
- sense not previously given: If there's any doubt about how to class something, use your judgment.
- dictionary: For simplicity's sake, let's limit this to dictionaries indexed by OneLook.
submitted: offered as a response to an OP describing a concept
anytime: from the creation of /r/neology in the latter half of 2011 to the closing of the election at the end of 2012
by anyone: Whether it's classy or not to nominate your own submission is a matter for your personal moral compass.
to /r/neology: Posts made elsewhere don't count, although cross-posts are fine.
Election procedure
Nominate a neologism in this thread, by quoting the word along with its definition and linking to the comment that submitted it.
Vote by bestowing karma in the usual way.
The winner shall be the nomination with the highest karma at the close of 2012.
You can both nominate and vote for as many submissions as you want.
All nominations should be posted as direct replies to this OP so that they get equal visibility and that sorting by karma works properly.
Feel free to discuss/lobby/campaign for the nominations wherever and however you like.
Prizes
As /r/neology appears unlikely to garner 500 subscribers before the end of the year, it presumably won't be eligible for the Reddit Gold credits given out by Reddit's official Best of 2012 awards. However, the submitters of the winning word and definition will be dubbed with titular flair in recognition of their accomplishment. Best I can do for ya.
