Who actually won the English Civil War in the end? The Parliamentarians won initially, and the more radical elements of the movement even succeeded in executing the king. However, the monarchy eventually returned after not too long of an absence, and many former Parliamentarian leaders were punished for their rebellion. On the other hand, the Parliamentarians did seem to succeed in their goal of establishing greater parliamentary influence and control at the expense of the monarchy
