I can kind of understand if you grew up in a place that was nominally secular, and the major religious institutions were all controlled by the government, that the idea of a cult being allowed to disrupt public health messaging, hate on LGBTQ people, hate on interracial marriage, etc... might cause a utilitarian to quirk an eyebrow.
