I know that Reconstruction failed. It's 2024 and traitor monuments are still being built, and confederates have infiltrated the US government at every level. We should have pulled them out root and stem as the Constitution advised.

Atrocities? The legal punishment for taking up arms against the US is death. It's literally the only crime and punishment the founders thought important enough to be defined in the Constitution, and we still fumbled handling it.

We should have dissolved the Confederate states and divided every plantation among the slaves that worked it.
