Nosy neighbors keep calling the police.

Post Body

Our neighbors next to us also own the house on the other side of us and the house across the street. Originally, they wanted to buy the house I currently live in so their family could have three house next to us. It feels like they are doing everything they can to get us to move out. There’s no HOA, so they go straight to the police. They’ve called the police twice because our grass was too high. Granted, it was getting a little long the first time, but grass grows. At least come talk to us about it before calling 911 over GRASS. Four times now they’ve called Animal Control on our dog. It’s either “he doesn’t have water” (he always does) he’s “barking too much” (when they walk through MY yard) or “he’s not getting dog food” (they saw us give him table scraps once and now think he doesn’t get properly fed). Not to mention all the police visits for pointless noise complaints. (Twice the “loud noise” was our vacuum cleaner) Not to mention them walking between houses through our yard, yelling across our yard, taking up all the parking in front of my house, and generally being terrible to us. Once I was smoking on MY patio (it’s legal here) and she yelled that I’m a degenerate. What do I do????? I don’t want to move, but it seems like they’re doing everything they can to push us out. Can I get back at them somehow? A way to make them stop? I just want peace.

I’ll go down my normal checklist:

1: Cameras - hardwired are better because you can get 24/7 capture. Use these to document the bad behavior and they help to show you are innocent. My go to now with our NFH is to ask when the alleged incident occurred and offer to pull it up on camera.

2: Fence - they make great neighbors. It may be a fight to get one up but it puts a stop to walking and yelling across your yard. This is also more expensive so it may not be an option.

3: Legal advice - at minimum seek out a free consultation with a lawyer. They may be able to advise your best course of action. We dealt with police calls and code enforcement for almost 2 years now. We have a mediation agreement on part of our issues and a cease and desist on others. A lawyer helped us get through things the smart way.

4: Other things that help - do not confront them on their property. Be civil and leave things to the police to handle. If you go to them they can use that as harassment. Use their tactics against them. If they turn you in for your lawn, keep in contact with the code enforcement officer and use city codes against them. I found one from the 40’s about livestock that was outdated but applied. Keep notes and videos. Times, dates, and any negative behavior towards you. It sucks and takes time but it’s evidence. Be a good neighbor. Kill them with kindness. Don’t retaliate in obvious ways.

It’s a long game but in the end it keeps you on the right side of things and shows that you are the victim of bullying. It can be a long battle and takes patience and investment. In the end it’s better than moving.
