I feel like we all mostly recognize how valuable Steph Curry is to the Warriors on the offensive end, but honestly this stat showed me that maybe even I was taking for granted just how valuable to the Warriors offense Steph has been over the last decade by looking at his offensive real plus minus numbers. Offensive real plus minus is defined by the NBA as a player's estimated on-court impact on team offensive performance, measured in points scored per 100 offensive possessions. Yes I realize that ESPN messed with the stat before the 2019-20 season that pretty much rendered it close to obsolete, but thankfully there's a very noticeable trend here regardless of how good/bad the stat is.
Steph Curry's Offensive Real /- League-Wide Rank By Season:
2009-10: 23rd w/ 2.52
2010-11: 12th w/ 3.13
2011-12: 13th w/ 3.72
2012-13: 3rd w/ 4.74 behind MVP LeBron James ( 6.32) and Chris Paul ( 5.10)Â
2013-14: 1st w/ 7.79, 26% higher than 2nd place (MVP Kevin Durant, 6.17)
2014-15: 1st w/ 11.41, 30% higher than 2nd place (Russell Westbrook, 8.80)
2015-16: 1st w/ 12.03, 65% higher than 2nd place (Russell Westbrook, 7.29)Â
2016-17: 1st w/ 9.25, 17% higher than 2nd place (MVP Russell Westbrook, 7.89)
2017-18: 1st w/ 9.09, 42% higher than 2nd place (LeBron James, 6.38)Â
2018-19: 1st w/ 8.58, 36% higher than 2nd place (LeBron James, 6.33)
2019-20: injured
2020-21: 1st w/ 7.08, 53% higher than 2nd place (LeBron James, 4.63)
Notice the pattern? In every healthy season since the 2012-13 season, he's number 1 league wide in offensive real plus minus, including the years with KD as his running mate, and in most of those seasons, 2nd place isn't even close to him, and even in his injury riddled seasons he's always near the top of the list.
Also I have a follow up question for y'all that I've been considering ever since I started doing more research into Steph Curry's legacy and on court impact: Does Steph Curry have an argument for the best OR the most valuable offensive player of all time?
