Victor Wembanyama is going to get robbed of DPOY this year
Post Body

I feel like it can't be denied anymore. Wemby is the most deserving player of the Defensive Player of the Year award.

Obviously he is not only leading the league in blocks, he is completely lapping the field, and I couldn't even imagine the number of times players wouldn't even attempt a shot with him lurking around. He's 2nd in the league in defensive rating, which is mind-blowing given how awful his team's overall defensive rating is. He's top 5 in the league in damn near every important defensive metric...

... but unfortunately, deserved or not, Rudy Gobert will likely win his 4th DPOY award this year. The Wolves are just too good defensively this year, nevermind the fact that their defensive rating is only a mere 1.7 pp100 poss better with him on the court vs on the bench.

Now you may ask yourself: what sets Victor's season this year from other recent block artists that didn't win DPOY, but instead finished 2nd? Guys like 2016 Hassan Whiteside and 2012 Serge Ibaka?

Well, Wemby this year has had to carry a defensive roster far worse than either of those guys did, and his impact far exceeds those guys as well. The 2016 Heat were actually worse defensively with Whiteside in the game vs on the bench, their defensive rating was better with Whiteside on the bench. Ibaka in 2012 only improved OKC's defense by 2.5 pp100. With Wemby on the court this year, San Antonio's defense improves by a whopping 7.0 pp100, and without him, San Antonio is statistically the worst defense in the league.

He's only a rookie, but Wemby is already a generational defensive player, already on par IMO with a peak Anthony Davis, and we still probably haven't seen the best of him on that end. Obviously if he doesn't win DPOY this year, he'll likely win it at least once in his career anyways, but I think he has the best case for it this year.
