Isn't Harden's step back literally a Lebron's crab dribble going backwards into a jump shot?
The way I always see it is that the last 2 feet have to land at the same time for it not to be a travel in these moves (exploiting the jump stop essentially) but the minor timing difference of one foot coming down before the other allows you to keep your momentum much more.
