We’ve seen several examples of a former player jumping immediately into a head coaching position despite no meaningful coaching experience.
JJ Redick is the most recent, although you can certainly argue that he wouldn’t have gotten the job if he hadn’t impressed as a broadcaster before that. Others, like Steve Kerr, had adjacent experience as a GM that helped their cause. Steve Nash served as a consultant with the Warriors (although I’m not sure if that mattered in his case).
The most pure leaps of faith would be Jason Kidd and Derek Fisher, who didn’t have any executive or coaching experience before getting their first jobs.
What current players could join their ranks?
I presume LeBron James could do it, but would rather pursue ownership instead. Steph Curry has the cachet to be the head coach one day (especially for the Warriors), but it doesn’t seem in his nature.
The most common name you’ll hear associated with this is Chris Paul, although perhaps he’s too polarizing of a personality. Rajon Rondo has been mentioned as a candidate as well, although it sounds like he’ll have to take the assistant route first. I’ve heard players rave about Garrett Temple, but presumably he’s not a big enough name to jump to the front of the line.
Who is your pick to wear the suit and tie?
Honestly? I could see De’Aaron Fox coaching one day for the Kings.
