Question for the recruiters out there
Post Body

When you guys check applicants, do you screen for learning disabilities and/or autism? I spent the last few years of my enlistment getting my Master’s to teach Special Education and even worked as a teacher when COVID shut down my command. Looking back, I knew several Sailors that legit should be classified as Special Needs. For example, a First Class with hardcore dysgraphia. The few times you could read his writing, letters were backwards with random numbers in there and nothing was spelled right. Another guy on the ship could barely read and couldn’t recall or comprehend stuff for the life of him. A guy in my shop hit all the wickets for Autism. He struggled so badly with his social abilities that he couldn’t do his job safely. Assessors refused to work with him after a few dangerous incidents. They were all cool but in today’s schools they’d be getting Special Education Services for sure. If someone has an IEP or 504 plan in their school records, is that something you see? Is that sort of thing a disqualification? From what I remember, all I had to do was give my recruiter a copy of my diploma.
