Essentially the article wants to study why sloth bears are so aggressive and are attacking people in India (as the bears are not predators and not hunting humans), this led to them studying their main conflict in the wild, which is the tiger. The bear is trying to eat insects and so won't be aware of the tiger sneaking up, and so the bear reacts very aggressively and dramatically when spooked, as this made the tiger back down and leave in most cases. They hope this information can help find ways to reduce bear attacks on humans.
