Going way out on a limb for this short story

I read the beginning of this short story in a sci-fi magazine in the 60s. An alien was on a mission to explore earth and was wearing a human "suit" as a disguise. It worried about being discovered, if only for odd behavior like sniffing car exhaust as it was more like it's native atmosphere. It lived in a ratty apartment with a communal bathroom and one day caught a glimpse of a woman with a zipper in her skin. I assume it was from some surgical procedure, but the alien assumed she was another alien. Any help appreciated.
