I read a book when I was a kid that involved the discovery of an "invisible moon" that orbits earth, and the inhabitants were mushroom people, or at least could travel to earth by spores or something similar. I think there was mention of a new element that helped make the moon invisible.
I remember enjoying the writing, but not finishing it because it was part of a series, and for some d*** reason my town library only had the third book.
