My Great-Grandmother was Elvie Francis and our eldest has an honour middle name for my other Great-Grandmother Ivy. Honestly I just liked the name but it is also a family tradition.
I'm not yet pregnant but we have floated ideas around and Elvie was quickly vetoed for sounding "made up". I thought that was unfair given that clearly my Great-Grandmother was called that. It made me wonder if it is a family name only or if its fairly common?
I think it's sweet if we were to have a girl (big hypothetical) and goes really nicely with our eldest's first name without being matchy or rhyming which isn't really our style.
We like short traditional/timeless and nature inspired names. Is it really so strange to call a girl Elvie?
Edit: pronounced el-vee
Edit: This blew up more than I'd anticipated, thanks for all the help! I get the sense from this that it's pretty widely considered nicknamey and it isn't popular enough at the moment to hold up in common use as an easily recognised given name. As always people have been wonderfully knowledgeable and kind. That being said those who like it (like me) seem to really love it which is really sweet. Obviously this was just a fun hypothetical for now but it's helped me work out how important it is to me and how it is perceived by others.
