Post Body

The names in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry are a really interesting mix sometimes, especially when organized by family. I'm not very familiar with southern naming, especially rural southern naming, but some of these names are... interesting? I'll try to summarize the family. The book is set in 1933 into 1934. Most of our primary characters are kids and teenagers, our narrator is 9. So that generation is split up on separate lines, other generations might be combined.

Simms (poor, white, mostly racist, not great people)

Charlie (father)

RW (male). I don't think we ever get what the initials stand for. He and Melvin "dropped out long ago."

Melvin

Jeremy (the only nice one)

Lillian-Jean

two more younger brothers who are never named

Wallaces (three brothers who own a store, also racist)

Dewberry, Thurston and Kaleb

They have a bunch of "red-headed" kids, but they're never named.

Grangers (rich, big landowners. The other two large landowners are Harrison and Montier, though we never hear more than that).

Fillmore Granger (deceased, father)

Harlan Fillmore Granger (current head of household)

Jamisons (decent, white people. Old South, still wealthy)

Charles Jamison (deceased, father) Same generation as Fillmore Granger.

Wade W. Jamison (lawyer, current head. "same years children" as Harlan Granger, treats black folks fairly)

Averys (black, sharecroppers on Granger land)

Joe Avery (father) and Fannie Avery (mother)

TJ Avery (never addressed by anything other than initials).

Claude Avery

Other children, including daughters who are not named.

Logans (our main characters. Own their own land).

Papa Luke and Mama Rachel (great-grandparents, were slaves). Caroline's parents.

Caroline and Paul Edward (grandparents). Caroline is usually called Big Ma in the book and Paul Edward is already deceased. They had six children:

Mitchell, Kevin, Hammer and David two girls (David is Papa to our narrator. Mitchell and Kevin passed away before the start of the book, along with the two sisters who died as babies and whose names aren't shared. As far as I can tell Hammer is his real name. No one ever calls him anything other than Hammer. Even people who don't like him call him Hammer.)

Papa and Mary are parents to our narrator and her siblings:

Stacey (boy)

Cassie (our narrator)

Christopher-John (always both parts)

Little Man (legal name Clayton Chester, but no one uses that unless he's in serious trouble).
