As I’m sure many of you can relate, I legally changed my name for various, complicated reasons. I decided to make this change upon obtaining my citizenship in this country, therefore killing two birds with one stone. In any case, it’s never been a secret that I’ve disliked my birth name for as long as I can remember. Not only is my new chosen name prettier, but also much shorter than my birth name. My family was not blindsided as they’ve known for years about this change. A year ago, I informed them of my new name as to give them time to get used to it. It made sense to get everyone I know to try and adopt my new name before the change was legally binding. And not once have they corrected themselves when not calling me the correct name. Now that it is legal, they are telling me how it is too difficult for them. Am I being selfish or unreasonable to not budge on this important aspect of my identity? How did you get others to adhere to your chosen name and what did you do about those who refuse to embrace it? I am seriously considering cutting them out of my life. Some extended family uses my correct name. All my friends have respected this change. My family? Forget it. I am so hurt and angry. Even as I’ve given them the less complicated reasons as to why the change they say things like they don’t see the logic. If you have any advice for me I would very much appreciate it.
