So I am writing a comic book currently that centers around Aztec Mythology, with the gods putting their powers into different artifacts and people finding them. I am aware that there are many similarities but plenty of differences between the Aztec and Mayan beliefs. I am a big fan of the myths of both of these civilizations, and I wished to incorporate them into my story. For example, I wanted to include a pair of twins that are the descendants of the Mayan Hero Twins. When thinking of this, my first thought was to claim in the story that Mayan and Aztec gods are the same beings, who have been interpreted different ways across Central/South America. Something similar to what Rick Riordan did with Greek/Roman mythology in his Heroes of Olympus series. Would I be wrong or even insensitive to make this claim? Should I have completely separate pantheons for each area?
Update: It seems the general consensus it that this is a very bad and wrong thing to do. I apologize if I may have offended anyone and I will better educate myself on other Mesoamerican cultures, and represent them better in my story. Thanks to everyone for the feedback!
Mixing Aztec and Mayan gods might confuse mythology enthusiasts, but creative liberties can make a story unique and engaging.
