Can I output query results as JSON from a stored procedure?

Hi,
I have a stored procedure for returning customer details by ID. This is servicing an API so I have to then take the result and manage it into JSON.
Is it possible to output JSON as the actual output from the procedure?
My object is very simple, along the lines of
{'id': 1000, 'firstname': 'Bob', 'surname': 'smith'}
I am currently running community 5.6.27
