Has anyone been a contracted music therapist before? (Not employee)
Post Body

Hello everyone! I recently got board certified and I am searching for my first job. Unfortunately there’s almost no jobs in my area (central Florida), but I recently got an opportunity to be a contracted MT with an outpatient therapy business. I didn’t want to be contracted as a first job because I know it is basically like I have my own business but I really just want that first professional MT experience on my resume and I’ve been looking for a job for months. I’ve been doing a little bit of research and I know now that if I am contracted I have to do the following:

  • pick a business name
  • sign up for a business type (sole proprietorship, LLC, corporation, etc.)
  • Use software like quickbooks or freshbooks to track financials OR start creating spreadsheets.
  • Track Expenses
  • Track Mileage
  • Track Income

  • For legal purposes:

    • Create a Contract or Agreement - the thing you and your client signs to agree upon services
    • Set up policies and procedures for the business (cancellation policy, payment schedule, etc.)
    • Sign up for liability insurance (and make sure it covers all the areas of work I need it to)
  • Do other things to legitimize the business: Vision, mission statement, Branding, Marketing, write out the goals, Write out how to measure success.

Is there anything else I should be aware of or take into consideration if I take this job? Does anyone have any advice?

Also, this is a part time position where they’re looking for an MT to work two days a week 9-5, the pay is 35/clinical hour (no payment if client doesn’t show), they offer 200 stipend for continuing education, and another small stipend for emergency health problems. Is this a normal hourly rate for a contracted MT? I do not know if this rate is okay or if I’m being underpaid. Any advice or insight is highly appreciated. Thank you!
