I'm playing a song on my guitar in the key of D major. It's a simple song, going Dmaj, Dmaj, Gmaj, Dmaj, Amaj, Dmaj, Gmaj, you get the gist. The song is supposed to end on a Dmaj chord, but I figured I would go Cmaj, Gmaj, then go home on the tonic of Dmaj. But that got me thinking, what is a C major chord in relation to D major? C isn't in the key of D major, so what's going on? Am I borrowing from a different mode without realizing it? I just want to know why this progression works when C isn't in D. The solution is most likely very obvious and I'll feel stupid, but it would be good to know! Thanks!
