I have a small fear of pushing my daughter into doing things because I like them, but she is enamored with my music room. I keep lots of things open tuned for her (banjo, nylon guitar), and let her pretty much "play" any instrument with supervision, even if it's pretty discordant. She has a small and growing collection of percussion instruments and she is starting to be able to keep tempo well at three.
I started violin when I was 5 and ended up fighting hard against it because I wanted to play bluegrass style music instead of the Suzuki method.
My question, I suppose, is should I just keep encouraging free play and let her decide if and when she wants to choose an instrument to be formally trained on? Should I nudge her gently to piano or something when she's old enough? I ramble on about basic stuff like chords and scales even though she has no idea what I'm talking about but she likes to listen. Should I try to set an overall curriculum?
I know there probably isn't a right answer, but it's just something I've been thinking about. Like any parent, I just want her to be loved and do the best I can by her. Any other musical parents try anything interesting with your kids?
