I have become pretty decent at writing short bits of music, but I am seriously stuck at this stage. I'll write a chord progression and melody, then try to continue it and......nothing. I try and try and try, and the times I do get something it doesn't feel like it's flowing, it feels like it's just jumping to something completely different and it doesn't sound coherent. Plus I have no idea how to arrange stuff. I see so many tracks with like 5-6 layers, and I don't know how to understand what they are doing as right now I basically just understand it from a chords melody perspective.
I see videos that are like "make different segments like a verse, and chorus" but never explaining how exactly. The pieces I write I try to think of whether they sound like a chorus, or into, or whatnot, but they just sound like general music idk. I have no many ideas saved that I have no idea how to turn into full pieces and any time I try I get nothing usable. I try adding layers but they either sound boring because it's just repeating the same stuff, or I try to make the new layers do something different and it sounds disconnected, where as music that's good each layer sounds intentional, and they work together.
Really need some help getting through this plateau.
