I’m trying to get my music theory skills up to grade 5 level, I’ve played guitar for a long time so know bits from that but at the moment I’m reading a music theory book ( The AB guide to music theory part 1 ) and I find it hard to take all the information in. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to help me such as specific YouTube videos etc.
My honest recommendation is to find a tutor/teacher. I've just completed the equivalent of ABRSM Grade 5 in the course of my music degree (and had a Berklee grad as my long suffering guitar tutor).
Having a teacher who can relate the aspects of music theory using the instrument you already know will make things much easier and faster. You don't need to understand figured bass as a guitar player, but you'll need to understand it for music theory grading. it'll be more simple to understand of it's explained as a method of denoting chord inversions (which most reasonably experienced guitar players will know) rather than in the rather dry and dusty way it's usually explained in books and courses.
