How to portray a downpour/storm?

Post Body

I'm currently learning music theory and I'm only a couple of years into playing bass so I'm very new to making music. I have a concept for a song where I basically want to portray a downpour/a storm in song form. I have a good idea for what I want to do for some parts of the song but I'm kinda stuck on how I want to portray the feeling of the rain coming down hard(this would be the verse, maybe the chorus as well). I'm thinking of maybe doing some sort of steady but intense 16th note progression and maybe adding some cymbal crash to portray the thunder. I'm just not sure on what would be good ways to portray that. I'm in a Metal band and I'm mostly taking inspiration from old school Metalcore. Any tips or suggestions?
