Hi all!
I've been producing/doing vocals for about a year now (haven't actually finished a song in five months lol), so please keep in mind my major lack of technical language/knowledge! I learned most of what I know from trial and error.
I use my partners recording equipment, so when they got a new mic, that meant I got a new mic! They had issues with their previous mic because it was on the cheaper side and it didn't pick up their deep/growly vocals very well and just got muddy. However, my voice is super different from theirs. My voice is pretty soft and breathy, which sounded fine on the old mic. Now, when I record my vocals, no matter what I do, I feel like they sound tinny, and like they're floating outside of the mix. I've tried a bunch of various EQ things, as well as using Izotope RX to denoise. Neither have worked yet! I thought doing more clips in my vocal stack might help, but it just makes things sound more airy.
I wasn't sure if it was the mic until I decided to record a quick verse on my phone to check how it sounded with my instrumental. The one layer on my shitty phone speaker was easier to mix! It's still poor audio quality though, and I have access to better equipment. Do y'all have any techniques for mixing vocals to make them blend better and reduce the tinny/airy sound? I bought a years worth of the Izotope suite thing so I have pretty much all the mixing/mastering plug-ins I could need. If you have any mic recommendations, I'll take those too, but I'm a college student and won't be able to buy anything for a while.
