Where I should “double track”

I am doing a cover of “scream of the butterfly” by acid bath and was curious in cases like a ballad if or when I should be double-or-quad tracking any segments. I have been told to double track rythym. Pan one left, one right. Record any lead track and pan dead center. Still new to this digital recording stuff.
