Advance - or signing bonus?

A question that Google seems unable to answer for me: has a label ever handed out what amounts to a signing bonus to an artist, rather than an advance? If a label offers a million dollar advance, could an artist ask for say 10% of that instead as cash, not to be repaid through royalties/sales etc? Would a label consider that an easier investment to make?
