I'm going to be in my senior year at my performing arts school and we are currently deciding what musical to pick. We were going to do something rotten, but a company in the area is planning to do it so we can't. The director wants to do Hairspray (even though we did it in 2013) but is still open to suggestions. But here's the thing, this would only be good for the white people in the department. We have actors to play every white character, but our amount of black males is lacking and she told a current senior that she would like to bring him back to play Seaweed. He would be in college and there are black males who could play the role (not very well, but still). We also only have 4 black females, including me, and she was already talking about casting me as Motormouth Maybelle. I', honestly tired of being typecast as the other, wise woman and since it's my senior year, I want a shot at the lead. So I'm looking for suggestions for musicals that I could suggest to my director.
Requirements: Preferably a black female lead (if not, that's fine), Female heavy (all of our strong male leads are graduating)
Thank You :)
