I'm hoping to try out for an apprenticeship at a theater company next year. They require one uptempo song, one ballad, and a one-minute monologue. I'm struggling with the monologue, but I've picked out a couple of ballads to one uptempo song that I can actually sing, which is Out There from Barnum.
The highest note I've sung is the A flat in "Music of the Night" (I'm not a music major, so I can't tell you if itโs the 4th or 5th octave), but I've hit a B flat in warm-ups.
The ballads I have in mind so far are Confrontation (from Jekyll & Hyde), Music of the Night, Anthem, and possibly Out There from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (which seems fun since I'd be doing two songs with the same name). Iโd like to have contrasting years to show I can perform something older (though I know Barnum is only from 1980) and something more modern. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.
Some other uptempo songs I've considered are My Petersburg, possibly Wilkommen (since my voice teacher has those musical theater books and itโs in a tenor one), and Lost In The Wilderness, if my voice complies in the next two months. So, I guess either modern ballads and uptempo songs would work, or any good pre-1960s musical songs.
