I tend to become obsessed with certain musicals, and listen to nothing else for a while after I discover them. In the 1990s, as a teenager, I remember finding my parents' LP player and the concept album of Chess. I finally moved on to Kristina från Duvemåla, another Björn & Benny musical (of ABBA fame). All that lasted into the 2000s.
Recently, I haven't been able to stop listening to Lin-Manuel Miranda's work. My Hamilton obsession lasted for close to two years, then I moved on to In the Heights and Bring It On.
During those long years between Kristina från Duvemåla and Hamilton, I sampled lots of good musicals, but nothing really stuck. Phantom, Les Mis, Miss Saigon, Sunset Boulevard, Cats, Rent, Starlight Express, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, etc.
I'm ready to find my next musical to fall head over heels for, and I'd like you to help me. My next obsession. A musical with excellent music that fits together as a whole (not a jukebox musical, then) and lyrics that start to draw you in after you've gotten familiar with the music. Finally, a book that tells a compelling story.
It's rare to find all three, so I'll settle for two. Bonus points if it's available on Spotify.
