Necrotic Ooze and reconfigure

As far as I can tell in the MCR, neither the rules for "equip" nor those for "reconfigure" require a permanent to have the Equipment subtype (or, indeed, be an artifact at all). The rules say that Equipment have these abilities, but it reads as descriptive to me rather than prescriptive. There's no rule that I can see that says what to do when a non-Equipment equips or reconfigures or gains equip or reconfigure. (Ditto Fortification and fortify.)

So if I have a [[Necrotic Ooze]] in play and a [[Rabbit Battery]] in the graveyard, can I successfully attach the Ooze to another creature?
